last night alex and i went to my friend and very talented recording artist’s album release party at bowie feathers.
hope riot is the real deal. raw talent.
for someone who only picked up the guitar and started singing a few years ago, you would think she has been practicing since childhood. her live performance was visceral and heart-wrenchingly beautiful. and unlike most band performances in a small venue ,the clarity of the acoustics was crystalline. her band was seasoned and they knew her sound.
her moody vocals, inspired by the border, are complimented by jazzy percussion and strings that sound not quite of our time. she is fiona apple, meets peggy lee. add in some 90’s angst and meloncholy b flat grunge and i’m sure that is, at least on the surface, part of the equation to hope’s sound. you will have to decide for yourself.
